Are you married?
Yes, we were married by a justice of the peace in our home in Somerville, Massachusetts on April 29th, 2006.
How long have you been together?
The anniversary of our first date is September 15th. It will be ten years since our first date this September! We'll be celebrating our marriage, and ten wonderful years together.
What’s the whole story?
We moved to Massachusetts from Vancouver in December, 2005. When Brad contacted his company to resign his position because of our impending move, the company asked him to transfer to their American office and offered to sponsor his visa. So Brad entered the country with a work visa sponsored by his company. In April, the branch of the company to which he had transferred was downsized, and his department was cut, so his work visa was no longer valid. According to immigration law, he was supposed to leave the country. He could remain legally in the country as part of Amelia’s family (she is American), but Amelia was able to support his petition for a new visa only if we could provide a certificate of marriage.
So you got married for a visa?
No. We got married because we love each other and this is what we had to do to stay together. We have been together for almost a decade – in fact, it will be ten years in September. So we are looking forward all the more to finally celebrating our ongoing relationship, as well as our recent legal marriage, with family and friends.
No wedding?
Technically, no. But we will exchange rings so there will be some sappy stuff involved. Bring your Kleenex and your camera. The celebration will be a small affair consisting of family and some close friends.
What are the “dark forces”?
The hulking Scotsman represents the corporate axe. The little monkey with the Uncle Sam hat represents our struggles with American immigration services.
What’s for dinner?
We are vegetarians and have decided to keep the meal meat-free (although Brad wants fish in the appetizers). If you have any special food-related needs or concerns, please let us know in advance and our chef will be happy to accommodate you. Once we have a menu we'll post it on the dinner page.
Should I bring a gift?
No! We are incredibly grateful for your efforts to be there, and consider that to be the best gift we could possibly receive.
Can I bring a guest?
Yes. If you have a significant other then by all means bring him or her.
What should I wear?
We’ll be nicely but not-too-formally dressed. You should feel free to wear whatever you like, keeping in mind that it is beachfront in September, and likely to be pleasantly cool. Keep your eye on the forecast.
Where do I stay?
Onset Bay and Wareham offer many hotels, inns and B&Bs. Please consult the travel page for more information on the area. Alternatively, you may wish to stay in Boston, it's only an hour by car. Also, we're right on the doorstep of beautiful Cape Cod.
How do I RSVP?
Thanks to modern technology it's now easier than ever. Please visit our RSVP page.
